I spent 5 hours waiting in Gambir station for my first overnight train to Yogyakarta. Earlier that day I met Tama, an Indonesian who assisted me in buying my first overnight train. He made me feel Indonesia is tourist-friendly. The ticket cost me around Rp 330,000 (Php 1,700/39USD) for the executive train, not the cheapest but the safest train and it’s an 8-10 hour ride.

“Is it safe to take the train?”, I asked my new found friend. “What do you mean?”
Is the train safe in terms of accident or is it safe for a female solo traveler like you?”, he answered. I said, “Is it safe for me? I heard an overnight train horror story in Thailand. A female tourist was once raped by a local inside the train. ” “Don’t worry, there will be an attendant, you will have a blanket and pillow so you can sleep, and a food and drinks (more like a snack), so it is safe. “, Tama assured me.

I can see the peak of National Monument of Indonesia (MONAS) lighted at night from the train station. Several trains have passed by but what surprised me is the ordinary train loaded with locals sitting on its top, it never occurred to me they also do that in Indonesia, I thought I can only see such in India. I was holding my ticket most of the time, making sure the train I will board will match the one on the ticket. I was ecstatic but at the same time scared. I silently wish my seatmate is a female.

The overnight train arrived on time, Tama is right, there’s an attendant who handed us blanket. It’s definitely not the luxurious type of train but more like an executive bus that we have in the Philippines, not like a sleeper train Thailand. A man in his 50′s sat beside me, he looked like a typical unfriendly stranger so I was uneasy and can’t sleep. But then, since I will be sitting beside him for 10 hours, might as well be friendly. I smiled and handed him Mentos, he declined and smiled back. Just like me, he had brought some snacks and chips on his bag, and I guess that tells me that my 1st impression was wrong. Shame on me! It’s been over 24 hours since I last slept, I was restless so I decided to sleep

The light blinded me while the train’s engine stopped at Tug station(Yogyakarta train station). I quickly eyed for a fellow tourists and saw two guy foreigners who looks like a couple. I was determined to follow them thinking for sure they know where Gang I and Gang II is, the backpacker’s street in Yogyakarta. But the moment I got off the train, the sunrise struck me. I haven’t seen the sunrise for the longest time so I thought of taking a souvenir shot. I saw the tourism officer talking to the two tourists I saw earlier about hotels in town. I lined up but all I can hear is posh hotels so I asked an employee of the train station but they directed me to the tourist booth. I took out the map that I bought at Gambir station but it’s useless, can’t locate the backpacker’s street that I’m looking for. I walked out of Tugu station and headed decided to take a cab. “I’m off to Gang II in Jalan Sosrowijayan, how much?”, I asked the taxi driver who quoted me a fix price of 6USD. Not bad, besides I can’t seem to see any free shuttle anywhere.

Gang me & Gang II is pretty close to the Tugu train station, the ride only took around 15 minutes. Several by standers approached me when I got off the cab, but I walked straight to Gang II trying to look for a cheap hostel. I noticed that the hostels with beautiful Indonesian interiors and artworks have signs saying “Full”. A local approached me and started following me, I was ignoring him all the time until I got to the end of the road, he warned me that it’s a prostitution area and said that almost all the hostels are full. I walked back, and he pointed towards one hostel fronting their small tour office. I walked in and the guy is still following me. Hmmm… I can smell adventure in Indonesia!

wow, thanks for the mention.
such an adventure is it? I missed shopping in Yogya. Ganda pa naman ng mga handicrafts dun. Pero siguro next time, I wont take trains. Let’s plan Bali next
sure Val! I know, the train is expensive! but for experience okay lng at least na try, nxt time tlga plane na din ako, AirAsia is cheaper! haha
May nakita akong art shop dun mis sa Yogya na super mura, actually tama ka, madame dun murang shop. kaasar walang budget for shopping, balik ako nxt time to shop naman. hehe thnx for the super detailed entry, dahil sau naligtas ako. hehe
I did not take any taxi naglakad ang lola from the train station to gang II. hehehe
I know, ang lapet lng pala! asar! tsk tsk
locals riding on top! similar to India indeed. kakatuwa naman. i like the lamp post with the design of the stupas of borobudur.
the train looks safe.
I l-o-v-e long train rides, they’re like epic journeys on their own. I can see how concerned you are about safety while onboard but I think you’re OK as long as there are other passengers within sight. That guy following you into the hostel is one you should be wary about haha! Let’s see what happens.
ang saya naman.. more adventures to come
my my… you just arrived there and you have had a stalker already? hahaha
Not fun if you have to worry about your safety all the time.
I guess it is more easy for a man to travel alone!
.. gael, nagdadala ka ba ng pepper spray man lang?!
Tama was right! Hehe. I’d love to take long train rides like you did, sana matry ko din to.
sometimes it makes me worry more whenever Im aware of the horror stories, kasi last time when I dont know any of these stolen kidneys in the train or the rape cases, tulog kung tulog lang ako whenever I travel alone.. hehe
do you think kelangan na natin ng pepper spray?
if you are to travel for 10 hours – whatever mode of transport, it would be wise to find where one can travel with the most comfort.
i smell adventure too. you are truly brave in traveling solo.
Ang galing ng mga solo adventures mo talaga, pero mas excited ako sa stalker na to hahaha, hope this is it
Ohno, Gael. I was at the edge of my sit again reading this. May kaba na naman ako. Hahahaha. Winiwish kong may superpower ka during that trip at makasigaw ka ng DARNA kung may mangyari man.
I enjoyed reading this story. Magdala ka na ng pangself-defense, or mag-aral kang magkarate/kungfu (parang mala-Angelina Jolie ang dating). Ingat mabuti sa mga trips.
*seat. Hahaha. Take care lagi.
reminds me of the sleeper train i took while in vietnam.
hirap siguro maging babae noh, mas maraming safety precautions na kailangang gawin.
teka, bitin yung kwento…. next post please
Tama was right! – liked it as well
.. have an adventure.. follow your instincts.. your backpacking instincts..
Hi Gael,
I keep on seeing a Thunderbird Resort-Rizal post in my blogroll, under your site update, but I keep on getting error messages whenever I click the link. Is there a mix up? I am excited to read about it, and interested in going there. Is there a chance I can go all the way up there via commute?
Hi there! yeah, I was creating the post yesterday when all of a sudden it got deleted, i hvnt finished the post yet, only 1 line came up and was posted so i had to delete the entire post before the facebook readers can read it. It’s a sponsored post so I’ll ask the PR how to get there via commute.
oh my, pahirapan ba ang sarili. for US$39, pwede na nga ang RT Jakarta-Yogyakarta sa Air Asia! or sa Batavia Air, budget airlines nila. Ano ba yan. Dami mo pa sana nagawa sa Jakarta. Bitin ang kwento dahil lang dyan sa train station.
haha that’s part of traveling experience EPIC!
sometimes taking a plane can be a bit boring!
i know some tourists and travelers who doesn’t use their plane tickets just to experience long bus rides and train rides bec that’s part of their cultural immersion, the best way to immerse with the locals is by riding with them. it’s not all about the destination but most of the time it’s the journey that matters.
Awwww envy! Wanted to take the train too, but just didn’t have the luxury of time. Hirap pagsinisingit lang ang travel sa work. The train doesn’t look so bad. Parang Partas bus, hehe. But Air Asia was a good alternative naman.
its a shame, i’ve been here in indonesia for 6months working as a field engr and yet haven’t been to yogyakarta….i’ve been dreaming of travelling alone, and but my on-call work sched dont allow me to travel far from the office. im staying most of the time in bandung. i wish to do the same like u when i have the free time.your blog really does inspire and keep it up!
Whoa scary yong rape incident, such a horror story story. Makes me look back to my train travel in Thailand from Butterworth, buti na lang walang ganong incident puro warm and fuzzy adventurous memories. I love train travels!
hi, i would like to ask how i can book a train ticket from JAKARTA TO yojakarta ? iS THAT EXPENSIVE FOR A TICKET PRICE COST RP600,000 ONE WAY ON THIS? THIS BOOKING IS FROM HOTEL, BUT I FOUND IT TOO EXPENSIVE. DO YOU HAVE OTHER OPTION ? TRAVEL DA TE : 25TH AUGUST 2011.
THANKS YOUR ADVISE.
tht’s too expensive. just go straight to the train – Gambir station. There’sa shuttle at the airport that will take u dirctly to Gambir. Or just book a flight from Jakarata to Yogya at Airasia.com It should only cost arnd 1.5K to 2k.
