Palaui Island is a protected landscape and seascape nestled in the northeastern most part of Cagayan Valley, Philippines. It is interesting to note that the last kilometer marker (642) up north of Luzon is found in San Vicente port which is the jump off point to Palaui.

Palaui Island, Cagayan photos
How to get to Palui Island in Cagayan Valley from Manila, Philippines:
by Bus to Sta.Ana, Cagayan:
The best way to get to Palaui Island is by taking a bus bound to Aparri and Sta Ana. Florida Bus will bring you to Sta. Ana, Cagayan (see list of bus companies to Cagayan below), you may also take Victory Liner bus or other buses bound to Tuguegarao City, Cagayan then take a tricycle to the bus station of Florida Bus. There are vans bound to Sta. Ana, Cagayan but if you happen to take a day trip to Tuguegarao from Manila, you will arrive at night and miss the last trip of the bus, if that’s the case, you can stay at the Florida bus station and wait for the next bus to arrive to take you to Sta. Ana. I highly recommend that you take the Florida bus instead since it’ll take you directly to Sta.Ana, Cagayan.
By plane:
If you’re taking a plane to Tuguegarao, you can just walk outside the airport, a few meters away is the highway leading to Sta. Ana. Cross the street and wait for vans or bus bound to Sta.Ana, Cagayan.
From Sta.Ana Cagayan to San Vicente port:
The bus and vans will stop at the market of Sta.Ana where you can buy food, water and booze at the market. Then take a quadcycle / tricycle to Sta Vicente port. Take note of the 642 kilometer, that’s the last kilometer marker up north. There’ a Php 50 fee that you need to pay for before going to the island and you have to sign in the log book at Punta Verde.
At San Vicente port, you can hire boats to Palaui Island. Php 600 if you will only be taken & picked up in Punta Verde where the trail jump off is located, it’s a 2-25 minute ride and you need to hire a guide (php 400 per guide good for 2 pax) for another 2-3 hour trek to the enchanting Cape Engano lighthouse. To avoid getting lost (like what happened to me and my long lost brother Angel) , please get a guide, you would need to log in in the log book of the community, this is for your safety. Palaui Island is surrounded by thick virgin forest, and mad waves, so trust us, get a guide!
If the sea is calm, the boat can take you directly to Cape Engaño lighthouse for Php 1,500-Php 2,000, no trekking required.
Boatman :
I highly recommend kuya Edwin Tabucol, a local of Palaui Island. Contact no: +639269064657. He has a boat that can be rented to take you to the lighthouse and to Palaui from San Vicente. He can also guide you to the lighthouse. Usual boat rate is Php 600 for the boat (up to the fishing village only), plus another Php 400 if you hire a guide or Php1,500-Php 2,000 ( direct to the lighthouse).
Buses to Cagayan:
Florida Bus website: http://www.gvfloridatransport.com/
Victory Liner Bus website: http://www.victoryliner.com
Dalin Liner, Ballesteros Liner (Sampaloc, Manila)
EMC transportation in Sampaloc Manila
GCP Manny Transport Service Inc.
Ballesteros Bus Line Co.
There are several vans back to Tuguegarao City (leaves every 30 minutes from Sta. Ana, Cagayan).
Palaui Island, Cagayan (Suggested) Itinerary: 3 days
Hours from Manila by bus: 14-16 hours
Crocodile Island close to San Vicente port
Anguib Beach- http://www.anguibbeach.com/ is another white sand beach in Sta. Ana, Cagayan . To get to Anguib beach you can take a boat ride for Php 1,200 for boat ride for 30 minutes or hike (look for a local guide).
Cagayan Special Economic Zone- casinos, a naval camp

It is really important to have a guide.
more travel guides to come gael

Hi, plano kong mag Sta. Ana this April 2011. May maisusuggest po ba kayong itinerary for a day trip sa place na ‘to? Balak ko umalis ng 5am from Tuguegarao papuntang Palaui island then balik din sa Tuguegarao kinahapunan. I would also appreciate information regarding sa first trip and last trip ng vans and buses from Tugue and Sta.Ana since day trip lang po ako. Lastly, saan po pala banda sakayan ng vans both in Tugue and Sta. Ana? Thank you very much!
Hi Eve!
chck here for suggested itinerary: http://thepinaysolobackpacker.com/philippines/travel-itinerary-cagayan-valley-2 Vans sa Tuguegarao is available til 6pm lng ata, ganun din sa Sta.
yep, pede naman day trip. just get a guide. =)
uuy! next piso seat sale, tuguegarao naman!
halu!! tanong ko lang po, same route din ba ito papuntang Sun City San Casino and Resort? Thank you ng marami. Very beautiful pictures btw. =)
yep. just have to take a trike ata to take you to Sun City once you’re in St. Ana already. =)
do you think that surfing is possible here? 3 to 4 foot waves is what’s considered to be surfable. thanks
haha No I don’t think so. =(
thanks gael! sana mapuntahan ko to
sayang nasa dulo na kayo ng luzon sana nag batanes na rin kayo
thanks for this gael! i want to go to Palaui Island soon. But would you say that it’s better to travel here in groups than solo? thanks!
hi Kei!
better in groups to share the expenses.
very informative. been wanting to see Palaui…the thing is, got a lot of climbs and races in my calendar. but soon…
I met and dove with Edwin Tabucol. He is a trustworthy person. Thank you for sharing your travel blog.
did you camp at cape engano?
below the lighthouse, sa may beach. but now, bawal na daw po mag-camp. you have to stay sa village dun sa island.
this is a very helpful tips for all backpackers.
hi teh gael,
will visit palaui island this feb…thanks for this itin… u r my inspiration n this trip… again maraming salamt.
keep inspiring and keep travelling =)
happy travels!!!
although I’m from Cagayan, I haven’t experience like what you did.
wow. very nice blog… will use the info in my upcoming trip this Holy Week. hhehehe.
Thanks for this!
hi, we just went to palaui island.. i was so inspired to go when i saw this website.. but we didnt know that they have implemented new rules in the island.. hindi na pwde magcamp sa cape engano or anywhere near the beach.. pinag-camp kami sa compound nila and made us pay per person.. hndi man lang matanaw yon beach from the camp site.. =( we were really disappointed.. no bonfire as well.. cape engano was the perfect campsite.. sobrang ganda and sobra linis.. but u cant camp their anymore..
i’m sorry to hear about that. that’s sad news, but i;m sure they wanted to protect it cguro.
mas mura ba mag bus to tuguegarao kesa mag eroplano na naka sale? wala naman ako trabaho kaya okay lang sakin kahit tatlong araw na bus ride hehe
Planning to go to Palaui Island but will be using my car to go North. Is it advisable to do this? Where can we leave the car to explore the island? Advice please.
at San Vicente port. pero i suggest asking na lang po the resorts in Sta. Ana if you leave your car there. or inquire po at the tourism office where you need to pay the entrance tickets. enoy!
Thanks for all the INFO. BIg help in my plans.
Hi Ma’am/Sir,
I just wanna ask if is it possible to have a Private Camping at Palaui Islands for about 2-3days?
Hoping for your reply.
best Regards,
jessel
hi, camping is no longer allowed near the lighthouse. you have to camp in the village.
