*Update March 2013 – Also check out my Ilocos Norte Tavel Guidehere.
Ilocos Norte is another good reason I am addicted to North Luzon in the Philippines. When you mention Ilocos Norte what comes to mind is the image of Bangui Windmills, Paoay Church, Cape Bojeador, Patapat Viaduct and the white sand beaches of Pagudpud. This booming province has a lot to offer, it is blessed with waterfalls, and impressive rock formations hidden in its long rugged coastline.

When touring with a group in Ilocos Norte, you can take advantage of the tours offered by the tricycle drivers. They have organized the tour into two parts: North (Pagudpud tour) and South (Bangui and Burgos tour) of Ilocos Norte, the rate is Php600 (maximum 3 pax) or a half day tour, you can choose from either taking the North loop (Php 600/3 pax max) or the South loop (Php600/3 pax max). I like the tricycle drivers from the South (Burgos town) than those from the North (Pagudpud) because the latter is too commercialized not to mention that the South tricycle drivers can offer a discounted rate. So when coming from Laoag City, you can ask the bus driver to drop you to Junction Sawit in Burgos town, hire a tricycle driver to start your tour there. Starting your tour in the South part (Burgos & Bangui) is practical then end it in North of Ilocos Norte (Pagudpud) because there are more accommodations in the Pagudpud like cheap home stay around Saud beach.
But if you are alone and you’re in a budget, you can do-it-your own in the Northern part (Pagudpud tour) and I suggest you hire a tricycle in the Southern part (Bangui and Burgos) and the driver will take care of the tour for you, otherwise be ready to endure long walks and the heat of the sun like what happened to me in Kapurpurawan.
But if you insist in doing the tour your own since you’re on a shoestring budget and you are alone, I have an upcoming Ilocos Norte Travel Guide specially written for you.

I woke up early in the morning to start my day tour in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte, my kind of trip for late holidays. I decided to take a brief walk to the beach passing by a make-shift bridge surrounded by coconut trees, and underneath is a small stream. Like a typical fishing village, old nipa houses and a couple of fish nets are seen hanging in the trees beside the shore. Surprisingly, I chanced upon this timid white pony grazing.
The sun is nowhere, the sky is gloomy, as if it is about to rain but the mighty Bangui windmills are all lined up at the horizon of the calm sea. As early as 5am, the women and the children are up already waiting by the shore for the fishermen, and in a few minutes, some boats started arriving, the women running to approach them, and started buying their fresh catch. I wish I would’ve stayed in Saud Beach longer to witness more of the local’s life and perhaps make friends with them, but the tricycle driver who will tour me for half the day was already waiting patiently for me by the dilapidated hut.

early morning in Saud beach
We started the tour at North of Ilocos Norte, pretty close to Claveria, Cagayan and the first stop is no other than the Patapat Viaduct! Isn’t it strange how a road that was built to prevent the perennial danger of landslides became one famous tourist spot? I was trying to remember if it has a historical significance or something. Nevertheless, the twin falls beside the long road and blue waters & waves of Pasaleng bay is a feast to my eyes. Also, a shipwreck dating from the Japanese occupation caught my eye. Its been said that treasure hunters and divers are treated to a wonderful diving experience here.

Patapat Viaduct photo
Our next stop is a cold spring turned into an infinity pool for the locals (entrance fee Php 25 for adults) overlooking the sea with mad waves and huge rocks, called Agua Grande. Nothing special about this spring though just like our next stop.

Paraiso ni Anton (Anton’s Paradise), consists of running waters the lush green forest to the highway with a stair leading to an image of Mother Mary. I tried to ask the driver who is Anton, but he doesn’t know either.

Timmangtang Rock formation

The tricycle then made a U-turn, swayed past the highway and turned right into a smaller road and finally stopped beside a marker that read Timmangtang Rock (No Littering Fine Php 500), a bell-shaped rock located along the seacoast of Sitio Gaoa, Balaoi in Pagudpud. According to the driver, Timmangtang Rock is the male rock and our next stop the Bantay-abot Cave the female rock, thus collectively called the Lover’s Rock.
I like best the scenic surroundings of Bantay Abot Cave, the small bridge, the waves, the blue sea, the wind blowing in my face and the grassy hills makes it an ideal place for some solitary moment.

Farther along the heart of Barangay Balaoi is what locals deemed to be the 2 sons of Timmangtang Rock and Bantay Abot Cave, called the Dos Hermanos Island. This identical rock formations can be seen from the most beautiful beach in Ilocos Norte, the pristine Maira-Ira Beach also known as Blue Lagoon because of it’s tempting blue waters.

Our last stop for the Pagudpud Tour is the hike to Kabigan Falls, it’s a mere 30 minute hike passing through streams and rivers and forest. Trekkers need to sign in a log book for security reasons, and pay an environmental fee of Php 10, and a local guide is required (wearing a green shirt with their name printed on it, it’s their uniform) and you can just give the guide a tip. (Php 100 is the minimum tip according to the driver).

The kind driver offered to bring me to Bangui Windmills for Php 100 saying it’s gonna be a long walk from the highway, ” gas lang po yung bayaran nyo Ma’am.” I declined because I was too confident I could tour it by myself only to find out I was dead wrong!
We bid goodbye as I stepped into an ordinary bus to Laoag, only to ask the driver to drop me off at Bangui Windmills. They drop me off at what they call the gateway to the Windmills where tricycle drivers are waiting for tourists. The tricycle driver quoted me Php 150, haggled it down to Php 120 (roundtrip fare). Yeah I know, I would’ve accepted the offer of the driver in Pagudpud. After all these years, I was able to visit the famed towering windmills standing grandly in the impressive coast of Bangui. Despite the scorching heat of the sun it ‘s truly a sight to behold.

My next stop is the highlight of my tour — the Kapurpurawan Rock Formation. My cousin who was assigned to work in Laoag 1st introduced me to Kapurpurawan. I saw its photo together with his photos in Australia, so I thought it’s also found there. But he replied, “that’s in the Philippines in Ilocos Norte. ” Now 3 years later, there I was walking alone to the rock formation, without any idea that it’s a long road ahead. I’ll tell you the full story in my future posts, for the meantime, let me share you a glimpse of this majestic art of nature.

The sun is about to set, only reminds me that I have to go back home. I ended the tour at the famous site of Cape Bojeador. Though some parts of it have been ruined by the weather, undoubtedly, its strong character stood the test of time. While sitting in its grand tower with a breathtaking view of Ilocos Norte’s coastline, I kept wondering why it took me this long to finally experience the splendor of the magnetic North.

Hi,
I was inspired by your blog and I came up with the idea of doing this. I want to do my first solo trip in Pagudpud. May I know how much will it cost me? and how to go to Pagudpud? Is there a direct bus trip from manila?
Thanks!!
Hi Red! =) yes, there is, you can take Florida bus in Kamuning or Victory Liner (Around Php 700) 1 way) but only up to Laoag and frm there there are several ordinary bus to Pagudpud. You can just ask around in Laoag for the bus station, or take a tricycle for Php8 to the bus station. For Pagudpud, half day tour is Php600 when you get those tour trikes, there are several of them., if you plan to tour the North side it’s Php600, and another Php600 for the south side. For accommodation, just ride a trike in Pagudpud center (php30) asked to be brought to any “homestay” near Saud beach, if it’s near the beach it’s Php500 per night. Have fun! =)
Hello Gael!
I like your blog! We will go in Ilocos this May.. could you give us the estimated price of itinerary? or even just the price of transport from Manila?
thank you
hope to see more of your travels.
Hi Gael, I’ve never done any travelling on my own ever.. and I really wanted to do one (for personal reasons), and I want to do it first here in Ilocos and possibly all the places you mentioned.. and I’m hoping to do it in a month or 2… I was hoping if I could somehow bother you with questions about it… I would really appreciate it very much… I don’t want to go into details so much here (I hope you don’t mind).. but basically it would be a week and I’m bringing my work with me (I’m a VA)… I really hope you can find the time for me… Thank you so much and this is so inspiring… and you are right, there are few “real” blogs that cater to Pinay Solo Backpackers, which really sad
kindly send me an e-mail Thelma. will try to answer your questions po. thanks for dropping by! =)
hi gael! very nice blog! daming info. may question lang po ako. safe po ba mag-travel ng mag-isa sa ilocos? will try to travel solo this weekend. thanks! =))
yep. very safe! =) get a trike for the tour s south ng ilocos norte. =) have a safe travel! =) have fun! =)
thanks gael!had a wonderful solo trip!thanks again! =))
yey! Glad to hear that. Thanks din for dropping by and letting me know ha. Happy travels!
Hope to visit Ilocos soon. I’ll recommend this to them. Hindi kasi ako makakasama
another friend of mine mentioned that her friends were fooled by those package tour na nkita nila online, after giving the downpayment ata, naglaho nalang bigla yung taong binayaran..I’ll recommend this post to them.
Thanks te gael.
hi gael, ive been reading your blog(actually been reading it for weeks already), and i was particularly interested on making this Ilocos Norte tour myself, was just wondering if the fare for the tricycle tour, correct me if im wrong, would be P600 each pax, given that there are 3 pax? meaning if i would be doing a alone, that would cost me P1800 for each leg(for the north and south segments)? it would be a great help if you could confirm this. thanks in advance
Hi Dune! =) nope. the Php600 is good for 1 trike where 3 people can fit. so if you’re alone it’s Php600. But if you plan to do the trike tour for the North and South it’sPhp 1200. I suggest you take the tour for South of Ilocos Norte w.c includes the Lighthouse, the Windmill, and Kapurpurawan bec the attractions are far frm each other. The North part wc icnludes Kabigan Falls, Maira-ira beach (Blue Lagoon), Banatay Abot Cove , you can do this by taking tricycles to and from the highway (PHP 40 to 50) and hopping on passing buses (PHP 25 to 50). Cheapest rooms are at Saud Beach, haggle the price , rooms are at 1K good for 4-6 pips but if you’re alone, you can haggle it to Php500, you can chck out Vangie’s Homestay (+63 9285393184). A friendly and reliable driver is Gerald, mobile: +63 9056266861. Have fun! =)
Hi Gael! Thanks for your write-up on your Ilocos trip. Me and my friends plan to go there during the four-day weekend this August. Can you recommend a place where we can stay overnight. Somewhere cheap, yet decent. A dorm perhaps?
Hi Allan!
Have fun! =)
Thanks for your reply Gael! One more question, please? Do you have any contacts in Saud Beach for accommodations? I would like to get in touch with them and reserve rooms, if that is possible. Thanks a lot!

Hi Gael, this is very helpful because I am also planning to go to Pagudpud but most of my friends are not available so probably I will have to do it alone. Your blog answered almost all the questions I had in mind. Thank you!
hi Ana, glad I was able to help.
thanks for dropping by! have fun!
baliktad tau. hehe
Wow! thanks for this! Im traveling solo to ilocos in february and i find this really helpful. Question, though: how much did you pay for the trike for the tour?
Hi Sheila. it’s mentioned on the post. Php600.
Meron po bang may alam kung gaano kaaga at ilang oras ang byahe mula Laoag papuntang Pagudpud area? sa gawing airport po kasi magstay at wala pang definite na plans kung pano. Thanks in advance for the help.
around 7am ata yung earliest if I rmmbr it crrctly. it’s 2 hours from laoag to pagudpud po.
Hi ms. gael, i’m going to ilocos norte on march 16-18 magkano po lahat ung nagastos mo EXCLUDING ung airfare? anong tour po pinili mo? south o north? Thank you! Super helpful ng blog mo sakin, sa lahat ng lakad nmen tinitignan ko ung mga blog mo muna bago umalis.
nag bus lang ako, bale yung sa north and south tour it is Php 600 yung bawat tour (good for 3 people), if you choose both north and south it’ll cost you Php 1,200, plus the homestay, Php 500 per night. roughly 3-4k lang kasama na dun ang pamasahe ko. isang tour lang kase kinuha ko yung north pero dapat pala yung south (windmill, lighthouse, kapupurawan) kase malayo sila sa isa’t isa. have fun!
Hi Gael! Thanks for the tips! Sure was helpful in making the IT for the family this Holy Week. One question tho, how far yung Vangie’s Homestay sa beach? (5 minute walk ba?) at tsaka clean naman sya? Will really appreciate ur response.
been to Claveria?
how long woiuld it take to travel from Ilocos Norte to Claveria, any idea?
i heard of Apo Lakay and Apo Baket, and you said it’s pretty close.
i might include “lolo” and “lola” on my list..
roughly 3 hours from Laoag i guess. we passed by sa Claveria during our last media tour. Pagudpod kase is 2 hours frm laoag so about an hour frm pagudpod.
Gael! Been a long time! Enjoyed reading your blogs! Cheers! Miss you
your blog is so inspiring.. would want to do my own solo adventure soon.. but is it safe?
hi there gael, me and my wife went backpacking for the first time to ilocos norte and vigan ilocos sur from mar 31-apr 1 and we visited all the sites in ilocos norte and we spent 11,000 (public transpo, 1d hotel accom, food, entrance fees to the tourist spots and souvenirs) and we are planning again pero namamahalan ako sa ginastos namin, backpacking ba uli kami o sama na lang sa group tour?
hmmm..baka po kase mahal ang hotel nya kaya ganun. yes, you can also join tour groups or try trike tour and if d naman kayo maselan instead of hotels, pwede kayo mag homestay.
Hello po! Kudos to your very informative blog. After only a week of reading your posts, it is now officially listed in my “personal list of frequently visited blogs”. Just want yo ask po gano po katagal ang north and south pagudpud tour with trike as main mode of transpo? Kaya po ba ng isang araw lang? My partner and I are planning to do our first DIY trip sometime in June or July and since we’ve been itching to see the famous Bangui Windmills we decided to go to Ilocos Norte. And this blog really helps a lot, as what one of the comments here says it answers most of the questions I had in mind too. Thanks in advance po sa reply and looking forward to reading more of your solo backpacking tale here in your blog…^_^
P.S. I am trying to come up with an itinerary for us and this blogs really is a great help.
yep. kaya xa ng 1 day.
enjoy!
Hi Miss Gael! I’m going there with my two friends this coming August. It’s gonna be a four-day trip from here in Leyte. Thanks for this great post. It’s gonna be a big help in making our itinerary.
Your blog is very informative and helpful. Have been planning to travel for a long time but didn’t have the guts to do so but reading your blog fueled the desire in me to go and discover wonderful place…maybe alone or with company…
Ms. Gael, may i ask nga pala, from manila you boarded a bus to laoag and it is there where you booked your hotel and where you hired the trikes for your tour? I have already been to claveria and pagudpud so now I am more interested to see the windmills and vigan city, please advise….
Hi. Il be going to ilocos via laoag airport this month. whats the recommended itinerary for me if il be going alone from friday night till sunday night only? i really wanna make the most out of it. thanks a lot
I lost the contact number nung driver ko before. pero yung mga trike driver dun minsan my van din sila for rent. regarding hotel, usually homestay kase, mga 1K good for 4-6 people. or if u want, try sa Blue Lagoon, Kapuluaan Vista Resort.
hi gael!!u’re such a good blogger..it totally gave me a full insight of what adcenture awaits me and my friends in norte!thank u for the wonderful infos..u got great eyes too in capturing photos..!good luck in your endeavor!looking forward for you next blog!
Hi Gael,
your site is very informative.
You’ve mentioned na pagdating ng laoag airport, pwedeng magpababa na sa driver dun sa JUNCTION SAWIT IN BURGOS TOWN, tapos hire ng tricycle to take you from south to north. Thank you very much in advance for your reply.
Hi Jennie, you can stay naman in Pagudpud overnight, tas the next day nlng kayo magtour if my oras pa naman kayo, madame naman trike in Pagudpud na nag offer ng north at south tour. try doing the north tour in the morning then pick up your things s hotel or homestay by noon , check out kayo, tas do the south tour after lunch tas derecho na kayo to laoag for your flight or bus to manila in the afternoon.
hi gael, we are planning to go to vigan this holy week. 28-30mar. our 1st stop is in vigan, but im also planning to go to pagudpud laoag and paoay and go back to vigan. what do u suggest? and san n pala ung link mo for solo adventurer?
hi lee, check out my travel guide here: http://www.thepinaysolobackpacker.com/2013/03/04/ilocosnortetravelguide/
