It was cold and dark when I got off the 4×4 jeep . A raw and strengthening wind is plummeting down the highlands straight into our faces. I wore every piece of cloth I found in my backpack ; a thin sports jacket, with 4 shirts inside, still I’m freezing, my feet is also exposed, I’m only wearing a cheap flip-flops and it’s freezing cold at 5 degrees! ”Rp10,000“, the old woman vendor is handing me a winter jacket for rent, I was tempted to buy but like I said, I have few cash left.

Teeth chattering and body shaking, I traversed the uphill climb towards the sunrise view deck in Mount Penanjakan with 2 European girls on a backpacking trip during Italy holidays. I turned around. “Where are you going?“, the skinny girl asked. “I can’t stand the cold. I need to rent that winter jacket.”, I replied. “Here,” she handed me her white jacket. There is snow in France, so you could probably understand why that cold weather is nothing to them. As always, I am deeply moved by the kindness of strangers during my travels.

yeah, my bad, same pic I posted before w/ the sunset photos! ![]()
It was still dark, but throngs of tourists are everywhere. The sky is charmed by the stars. I pushed my way into the crowd waiting in anticipation for the rising of the sun. I joined the European girl that I met during our Prambanan tour, this time she’s not alone as she had made friends with 2 guys. I stood right beside her. In a few minutes, the sun slowly emerged. The brilliant orange hues of the rising sun mixed in with the pale blue of the dawning day. I find it strange why people applause for fireworks but never for a sunrise. Nonetheless, I’m hearing shutter clicks everywhere in desperate attempt to capture the breathtaking moment.

As the night began to fade, the sun’s casting light slowly unveiled to us one of the most beautiful sight my eyes have ever seen. Its rays started to lighten up the 3 volcanoes from afar sitting under a shroud of fog. It was a surreal experience! .

yeah, that’s not me.
As I stood there enthralled by the magnificent work of nature, I saw a couple crossed over a damaged fence, I followed them. The view is better on that side, I felt closer to nature with all those trees in saturated orange and bright yellow leaves. The woman sat on a cut tree while waiting for her husband who was carrying his expensive camera with zooms lens as he followed down the slippery trail to the forest. I wanted to follow him because I’m ecstatic to finally walk through those beautiful trees with colorful leaves but was too worried that I will have a hard time climbing up and no one will help me.

After a few minutes, the man came back, and joined his wife. A group of Indonesians then asked to have their photos taken with them. I remember back in Prambanan, the “blonde” tourists were warned thats locals would most likely corner them for souvenir photos. It’s amazing how we find the local culture so subtle when we are in a foreign land. Something ordinary to the locals can be quirky and astonishing to the tourists and vice versa. Curiosity keeps us alive or kills us during our travels.

Mt.Bromo sunrise photo
Sunrise over Mt. Bromo is sublime, it was far too magical for even my big dreams. The experience is truly ineffable, I’m afraid my photos weren’t able to give justice to its divine beauty. It was a heavenly moment, something I’ve always longed to see but was too ephemeral and it left me standing there wishing that moment would last longer. During my journey, I have come to find that most of the time the most beautiful things are ephemeral…just like LIFE.

I hope to stumble upon your trails when me and my wife start our journey to life’s most enchanting soul-seeking places (in the Philippines). Syempre una Pilipinas and maybe somewhere along the way we might decide to go elsewhere out of the country. Thanks for the beautiful travel photos, Gael… – Sam

Ah, simply breathtaking! Now I am putting it on my bucket list! I’ve been obsessed with sunrises and sunsets, and recently with views from top of mountains. Combine them together and it’s simply bliss!
Great post Ate Jill. I am now planning my Indonesia backpacking for next month and this post just put Mt. Bromo in my itinerary. I guess there are reasons for such ephemerality. In that case we will not be able to appreciate and long for that heavenly sunrise if it’s there for longer moment.
hi Gael!this is AWESOME!!!! =))
we’ll go there this coming week! can’t wait to see those volcanoes up close!any tips?thanks!thanks! =))
Maja
I suggest you go get a tour package for your convenience. They’ll arrange evrything. You can get one in Gang II or Gang I in Yogyakarta. Kindly chck my Indonesia series. Enjoy!
thanks Gael! sobrang enjoy ako reading your blogs! good job! one last question.from cemoro, ilang oras pag-akyat sa mt. bromo?we’ll be coming from surabaya airport then we’ll go straight to cemoro.eta to cemoro is 4am.will that be enough time to catch the sunrise?salamat po ulit! =))
yeah, just arrive early po. 4am is a good time to be at the viewing deck. have fun!
saglit lng. you need to go to the viewing deck muna. by the way, a jeep is essential w.c is kinda hefty, mga Php800 per person, bec if you plan to walk gotta start as early as 2am. then after the sunrise view, you can go the Mt.Bromo na, it’s not tough naman tlga kase toursiyt na ang area so they’ve developed the place na. my stairs na din. pero my kataasan pa din at hingal na hingal ako. haha
hi gael!mt. bromo was majestic!tama ka.nakakahingal umakyat!may guide nga kami but he preferred to climb.there were motorcycles na makukulit but our guide always tell us na too expensive daw.pagdating naming viewing deck pwede naman palang umakyat ang 4×4 dun!hayzt!kaloka si guide!akala namin there’s no other way but to climb!but it was worth it naman.malamig!and the view was great!thanks sa mga tips!looking forward for more blogs from you!good job!more power!(parang pang-artista noh!)hehehe!thanks again! =))
I wanna go back to Indonesia to cover other volcanoes.
cheers to more travels!
Thanks to you, I’ve found the perfect spot to have my picture taken atop Mt. Penanjakan. I sat on the same tree stump. Picture perfect shot, indeed! I had my photo taken by a young Indonesian guy whose group followed me to the right side of the view deck when I told them I know a nice place for photo ops. I was alone at that time because I decided to ran off and leave my friends three-fourths of the way to the top because I wanted to catch the sunrise. We did the long trek through the forest, the local way, as they call it. I believed we trekked for close to two hours. All my exhaustion faded away when the of the Tengger Caldera at sunrise.
Btw, it was nice meeting you at the Imprints Dispatch Magazine event. Your blog inspired me to do more solo trips. I’m doing another one very soon.
Continue exploring and inspiring others. God bless.
edit:
*All my exhaustion faded when I saw the magnificent view of the Tengger Caldera at sunrise.
Gael, will you kindly tell me when did you visit Mt. Bromo? Was it in March and what particular date. Many bloggers said that March is a rainy month in Indonesia but the pictures you posted were perfect. Were these taken in March?
Gael, did you visit Mt. Bromo in March. Please do reply.
no. i visited it october. but its ok to visit it in march.
just bring thick jackets/ winter jackets.
yay! lovely and amazing pix!!! i’m currently working in Jakarta, so excited to visit the place!!! @_@
Hi gael!
I’m new in your blog but i started to love browsing it. I love also to travel but not alone like you, lol. I’m scared that’s why i really admired you for that. Anyway, your blog is very informative. I knew only Bali, Jakarta when you talked about Indonesia but this Mt. Bromo is really beautiful. Its like an autumn somewhere in Japan or Korea because of the blooming flowers…I wish someday i can go there and will include it on my wishlist place to travel…
i fell in love with your photos
