Recently named by a famed international travel magazine as one of the “15 Best Secret Beaches in the World”, Panglao Island has long been flocked by both foreign and local tourists for its iridescent underwater world. During my latest trip, I stayed at Amorita Resort in Alona Beach which reminds me of the lively Boracay, another majestic tropical beach crowded with resorts, restaurants and bars.
Unknown to many tourists, Panglao also offers great gastronomic adventures featuring both local and international cuisines. Here are some of the best restaurants that I discovered in this town:
Giuseppe Pizzeria and Sicilian Roast
This cozy restaurant aims to bring the classic taste of the Italian countryside to your dining table. From pizzas, pasta, cheese, olives and fine wines, Giuseppe Pizzeria and Sicilian Roast offers unrivalled recipes prepared from imported genuine natural ingredients from Italy.

Try their Insalata Di Salmone (a home-made marinated salmon served in a bed of lettuce and onions with a tuna cream cheese dressing), Insalata Nizzarda (salad of tomatoes, beans, cheese, tuna, carrots, onions and olive oil) and Pizza Gregorio (tomato, Mozzarella, sausages, salami, smoked ham and Parma ham).
Jugalis Bistro
This humble restaurant along the road to Alona Beach is my personal favorite. The friendly chef Jorg Linke warmly welcome guests with his jokes, making everyone feel at home. The unassuming and rugged interiors of Jugalis Bistro is belied by its sumptuous unrivalled Spanish dishes.

Matched with a strong beer, the Arròs negre which is traditionally called black paella is my top pick. This palatable dish is made of rice, squid, shrimp, and olive oil, topped with sliced eggs, lemon and tomatoes.
C.U Restaurant and Delicatessen
Located along Ester Lim Drive, this deli shop offers a wide selection of cold cuts like beer ham, parma ham, paprika, salami, coppa and a variety of cheese. They also have baked-fresh breads, cakes and pastries.

Try their scrumptious cakes like Mango Cheesecake and Black Forest and their delicious espresso. We only tried the desserts in their deli shop but their restaurant also offers Filipino cuisines like beef steak Tagalog, adobong kangkong, and kinilaw.
Saffron Restaurant and The Deck
Amorita Resort is a place where you can savor both authentic local and international cuisines. Guests can also avail of Bohol by Night Tour, a gastronomic fair featuring the aforementioned restaurants in Panglao for Php 1,000 per person minimum of 6.

The resort’s center piece, The Saffron Restaurant and The Deck offers unparalleled Boholano cuisines and the heavenly Luy-a Degustation (ginger-based dishes). Saffron Restaurant serves Boholano cuisines which features luscious heritage recipes passed through the generations and delightful versions of local favorites like chicken binakol, balbacua, takla and toron. The Deck on the other hand offers the remarkably presented Luy-a Degustation like fresh tuna kinilaw set on mago carpaccio with spiced coconut sauce, orange ginger panna cotta, and coconut ginger sorbet.
