Davao City – The cozy Ranchero is popular to Davaoeños for its hearty baby back ribs. Like most steak houses, this intimate and relaxed restaurant elicits a cowboy atmosphere. Its roaring ranch-inspired façade draws the crowd whatever the weather is. The interior is adorned with wooden furniture, nostalgic paintings of cows at the countryside and woven baskets.

Dragon fruits on display outside the Ranchero’s entrance are eye-catchers. This fruit along with melon and lemon are turned into mouth-watering shakes. Ranchero sits on the 3rd Floor of Abreeza Mall in Davao City with a signage boasting of “Sumptuous Filipino Ranch Style Cooking”. Although I did not get to taste their steak as we were there for merienda only, I still feel blessed to have tasted their legendary Filipino dishes as well as their delicious kakanin.
We were served first with fresh lumpia. Unlike the regular lumpia made of mongo sprouts wrapped in deep friend thin crêpe, the fresh one has a soft thick crêpe. The fresh lumpia fillings is composed of ground pork, shrimp, grated carrot, beans and shredded cabbage among others. The sweet and garlicky sauce of fresh lumpia makes it taste even better. Ranchero also serves large fried lumpia with vegetables fillings and lumpiang hubad, lumpia vegetables fillings without wrappings.

Ranchero food in Davao City
Another local favorite is the dinuguan (pork blood stew). This odd-looking dish is sought after in the Philippines. Dinuguan is a stew of blood and meat simmered in rich, spicy gravy of pig blood, vinegar, and garlic and usually topped with chili.
But the highlight of our merienda is the Filipino native delicacy – the Kakanin Trio. This is inspired by the popular food in the province especially during fiesta. Kakanin Trio composed of tibok-tibok (maja blanca), suman sa latik, and glutinous rice with mango. They are also available as individual serving.
Ranchero has many other dishes to flaunt like garlic chicken, pancit bihon, and kare-kare. Indeed it is a perfect place for a romantic dinner for two, and lunch with friends or family.
