Cheap Accommodations in Zamboanga City

Zamboanga City – This charming often-misunderstood-city is bursting with all kinds of accommodations – from cheap hotels to mid-range and high-end. It is by far, one of my favorite cities in Mindanao – south of the Philippines because staying here won’t cost you an arm and a leg, and I find it safe despite its negative publicity in the mainstream media.

Atilano Compound is well known to budget travelers headed to Zamboanga city for its cheap hotels. I stayed in this area the first and second time I visited Zamboanga City this year with my friend James (on my 3rd visit, I stayed at Garden Orchid Hotel), and by far, I had a pleasant experience.

How to get to Atilano Compound in Zamboanga City:

By Jeep:

From Zamboanga City airport, walk until you reach the gate. Look for jeepneys with “Canelar” sign board. Tell the driver to drop you off at Atilano Compound. Landmark is Gerry’ Grill in Mayor Jaldon Street. Fare is Php 7. I suggest sitting at the right side of the jeep so you can see Gerry’s Grill, the landmark. Walk to the street beside Gerry’s Grill until you reach the dead end where you will see the first pension house – N. Atilano Pension House, turn right to check out other cheap hotels in Atilano Compound.

By Tricycle:

You can also hire a tricycle from the airport for roughly Php 100. If coming from the city center, trike fare to Canelar is Php 30-50.

it’s pretty safe now, we even saw some foreigners on vacation in the area plus there’s a lot of military, police and even US marines camps there. it’s not really like what’s usually portrayed in the news. personally I think Manila is more dangerous since crimes happen everyday, unlike in the south.
