ZURICH TRAVEL GUIDE (Budget + Itinerary) 2023

This is a comprehensive Zurich travel guide with Zurich itinerary, sample budget, things to do, and budget hotels.

Zurich would not have existed without Limmat River, which provided the means to use the land, the forest, marshes, and islands.  Situated near the Limmat River, Lindenhoff Hill was once embraced by water, making it a key location for fortified settlements as early as the Neolithic and Bronze Age.   It is said that during the Middle Ages, Lindenhoff Hill was inhabited by the Celts, as proven by some artefacts and ruins of an ancient Roman fort excavated by archaeologists.

Fast forward today, Zurich is one the world’s most liveable cities.  It is the largest city in Switzerland, a clean, well-organised financial center that is home to a large number of headquarters of major banks, and international companies.

While we were initially preparing our Europe itinerary, Zurich wasn’t part of it.  But we added it last minute since it’s accessible from France and Italy, countries that we planned on visiting.  Zurich may not be as popular to tourists as other European cities like Paris, Rome, or Venice, but it has interesting attractions up its sleeves that are worthy of your attention.

To help you plan your Zurich trip, here’s my Zurich travel guide with sample Zurich itineraries.

ZURICH SWITZERLAND PRE TRAVEL GUIDE

zurich itinerary

BEST TIME TO VISIT ZURICH:

  • June – August: The peak months to visit Zurich is  during summer – from June to August.  Expect the weather to be pleasant during summer, but everything is expensive (hotel, flights, etc.) and the city can be quite crowded as it the season when tourists flock Zurich.
  • September – November: This is the autumn season for Zurich and the shoulder season, meaning there’s lesser crowd.  The weather is starting to get cold during fall, so bring warm coats and jackets. This is a good season to visit not just because of the colorful trees but also because the hotels and flights aren’t as expensive as during the summer season.
  • December – February: We visited Zurich during the winter season, which is the off-peak season, and the city is not crowded at all! But it can get very cold, so bring enough warm coats and jacket.  The hotel rates are cheaper during this off-peak season.  However, some of the tours are halted during the winter season. Nevertheless, if you love shopping, you’ll surely enjoy the Christmas markets in Zurich!  If you visit in January, there’s a huge price drop for many boutiques and shops, so you can shop until you drop!
  • March – May : Another pleasant season to visit Zurich is during spring, when the temperature is still quite cool. It’s not peak season yet so it won’t be that crowded.

ZURICH MONEY:

The currency in Zurich is franc (CHF), like the rest of Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Cash and credit card are accepted, but please make sure to call your bank to inform them that you will be traveling to Switzerland, as some banks may put the transactions abroad on hold thinking they’re fraud. The best rate is still the bank’s rate, there are plenty of international ATMs scattered around Zurich City. Some establishments in Zurich or other parts of Switzerland may accept euros, so if you still have extra, you may spend it in Switzerland.

 ZURICH WI-FI:

It’s important to stay connected online when traveling around Zurich.  You can rent a pocket Wi-Fi before flying to Switzerland or Europe below

If coming from the Philippines: RESERVE HERE

If coming from Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam & other countries: RESERVE HERE

ZURICH ELECTRICITY:

Electricity in Zurich is 220V and 50Hz. Use adapter for gadgets and appliances from other European countries.  If you are coming from the Philippines or Southeast Asia, bring travel adapter to be able to use their socket.  I suggest buying one from your country before leaving, because if you buy from Switzerland or Europe, the socket of the adapter where you plug in your gadget before plugging to the actual electrical socket will most likely be a European or Swiss socket.

ZURICH SAFETY:

Zurich is pretty safe for travelers.  My friend left his bag with all his valuables (credit card, cash, camera, & phone) inside the train when we got off at Zurich Station from France, but a young Swiss guy hurriedly called us and gave us  his bag.

But then again, as in any other cities, be careful with your valuables, don’t just leave it lying anywhere especially in touristy areas.  I lost my watch because I didn’t realize right away it had slipped off my hand while we were walking. I only found out it was missing after a couple of hours, so when I retraced my footsteps, I could no longer find it.

 1.ZURICH CARD

The best way to explore Zurich’s top tourist attractions and museums is by getting a city pass, and the Zurich Card is highly recommended.  The Zurich Card is available in 2 variants: 24 hours and 72 hours unlimited travel.  The Zurich Card includes FREE airport transfers and locals transport (bus, train, and tram), plus FREE entrance or reduced admission to about 40 Zurich Museums and river cruise.

2.ZVV DAY PASS or MULTIPLE DAY PASSES

Another recommended pass in Zurich is the ZVV  Pass that comes in 2 types: the ZVV DAY PASS and ZVV MULTIPLE DAY PASSES.  What’s the difference between the ZVV Day Pass and Zurich Pass? Well, the ZVV Day Pass only covers the public transportations, you cannot use it to get discounts or FREE admission on museums in Zurich. So why buy it? Well, if you’ve already explored the top Zurich Museums and you still have 1 day left or perhaps a few days left in Zurich, then you can purchase the ZVV Day Pass (good for 1 day) or the Multiple Pass (good for travel on any 6 days)

 ZVV Day Pass

If you only want to use transport for 1 day, best to get the ZVV Day Pass that allows you to unlimited travel using public transport (train, tram, and bus) within specified zones for 24 hours.  So, if you’re traveling in Zurich for 1-5 days, this is a great option.

How much is the ZVV Day Pass? Here’s the price list for 2019:

ZVV Multiple Day Pass

If you plan on exploring Zurich for 6 days , the ZVV Multiple Day Pass is a great option because it offers up to 10% discount compared to getting a day pass only.  Basically, the ZVV Multiple Day Pass provides 6 DAY PASSES for use on any travel dates required.

Important: ZVV Multiple Day Pass must be stamped in a machine before traveling.

3.SWISS TRAVEL PASS

If you plan on traveling around Switzerland, getting a Swiss Travel Pass is recommended. Train rides to and around Switzerland are pretty expensive especially if you are booking it within the day or a day before.

GETTING AROUND ZURICH

ZURICH TRAVEL GUIDE: TRAM

Since most of the best places to visit in Zurich are concentrated in District 1, a leisurely walk is one of the best ways to explore this bustling city. However, if you are pressed for time and want to maximize your stay, you can ride a tram or a bus.  Taxis are pretty expensive, so if you don’t want to empty your wallet, avoid it at all cost.

I prefer taking the tram when traveling in Zurich, and I saved a few bucks by getting a day pass.

By 1218, Emperor Frederick II also endowed Fraumunster the Imperial immediacy, where they are free from the authority of any local lord therefore increasing its political power.

ZURICH ITINERARY : GROSSMUNSTER CHURCH

Why is visiting the Grossmunster one of the best things to do in Zurich?

When walking along  the Limmat River, one of the most noticeable buildings is the Grossmunster  Church with soaring twin tower. Grossmunster is one of the 4 historic churches of Zurich, along with St.Peter Church and Fraumunster. It boasts of Romanesque design featuring medieval columns.

Grossmunster Church is believed to be erected by Charlemagne on the graves of the brothers Felix and Regula, Zurich’s patron saints. Story has it that the brothers are members of the Theban Legion in Valais, Switzerland. When the legion was ordered to be executed after converting to Christianity, the brothers escaped to Zurich. However, they were caught and beheaded.  It is believed that they picked up their heads, and walked uphill (about 40 paces) to pray before dying. The same exact spot where they died and were buried was discovered serendipitously by Charlemagne when he his horse lurched.  Charlemagne then decided to construct a monastery here now known as Grossmunster Church.

Beneath the Grossmunster Church is Helmhaus, a popular platform for modern arts with emphasis on Switzerland. Most of the exhibits here are works of Swiss artists or artists residing in Switzerland.

Zurich is also where muesli originated.  It started when Dr. Maximilian Bircher-Benner fed his patients with cereals and fruits, which later on rose to fame.

Zopf is a popular braid bread in Switzerland that is traditionally eaten on Sunday mornings. It is said that before baking the zopf, the rough is coated with egg yolk to make it rich and shine.
